BOLDMERE ST MICHAELS 0 ATHERSTONE UNITED 1 MARK Rosegreen's second minute goal proved enough to earn nervous Atherstone a victory over gallant Boldmere at Church Road last night and secure them a home tie against Hednesford Town in the FA Cup second qualifying round on Saturday-week.

After the weekend's initial tie in which the Adders totally mesmerised their opponents only to find their insipid finishing and Mikes' keeper Richard Anstiss factors they could not overcome, United again struggled to see off their lower league rivals.

However, Rosegreen's early strike gave them the narrow cushion that edgily held on to despite a much improved performance from Boldmere, who showed far greater determination and defensive qualities that in the previous tie.

United boss Mick Brookes said: "After getting the ideal start we just went off the boil and let them play. Fortunately we defended well when it mattered and managed to come through unscathed but I was far from

impressed."

[Caption within article:] Mark Rosegreen ... snatched crucial goal.

should, have paid dividends.

Rosegreen, who again impressed with his show of expertise in front of goal, proved just too high for his square pass to see his square pass to Steve Campbell.

But it was Donovan who had the best offering in the dying seconds when Thurman, unfortunately for him his parry fell into the path of MERCHANT and he made no mistake.

Turner again shows his agility in injury time when Merchant again broke into the box to smash an angled drive and then the game was all but over by the impressive performance marking the best for them through the whole of the season (as if their championship form had been resumed as [unclear]) at the close enough to end a similar stretch of good form.

A SUPERB goal from Mark Rosegreen, his second in as many games, put Atherstone on course for their first Beazer Premier success of the season as Mick Brookes' men turned on a classy second half display that sunk Gravesend without trace.

'Rosey' struck early in the second period with a clinical finish after Craig Knight had set up the opportunity with a slick piece of build up play that carved out a huge hole in the visitors' back division.

From then on the 'Fleet' hit turbulent waters as the Adders rode a crest of wave to run out easy winners with Danny Donovan and Shaun Marchant adding further goals in a four-minute spell late on.

After three draws and a defeat in their four previous encounters this term, the tide finally turned in United's favour much to the satisfaction of manager Brookes. He said: "We were a lot more decisive in front of goal, especially after the interval.

Best games

"Rosey took his chance expertly and once we were in front, the result was never in doubt. It was a solid all-round performance although I was pleased with the contribution that Craig Knight made. He had one of his best games for the club and I am sure it will do his confidence the world of good while Paul Upton was absolutely superb."

Gravesend were the first to show and could easily have gone ahead on seven minutes when Lee Turner, who along with fellows defenders said was the highest scorer in the whole of the Beazer League, found a huge void in the home defence making his home debut for Atherstone but unbelievably misused his shot wide of a bagging net.

The set of the hosts and on 17 minutes Rosegreen wasted a gilt-edged offering as Keith Russell, who along with fellow wideman Everitt and bringing a genuine threat to the Fleet rearguard, clipped in a low shot from the former Nuneaton man centre ally off target to round 'keeper Lee Turner.

There was no shortage of goalmouth action and when Gravesend's Richard Powell clipped in a low skidding centre, Leigh Everitt reliably blocked clean and it failed to drift inches over the bar and on to the roof of the net.

As the half wore on the more Adders pressed, Russell having a goal disallowed for a foul on 'keeper Lee Turner, playing his 100th game for the visitors, and the same

player seeing his headers hacked clear off the line by Powell.

Rosegreen's late challenge on Turner earned him a caution but the striker was celebrating on 56 minutes as he fired United in front. Nick Whitehurst, back to form after an indifferent start to the campaign, fed Knight whose penetrating run down centre-field ended with an astute ball to ROSEGREEN and his fierce rising drive from 10 yards bulged the back of Turner's net.

The Fleet threatened just once after going behind when Portway's goalbound drive glanced off Malc Randle and flew for a fruitless corner otherwise it was Adders in the driving seat and it came as no surprise when they extended their advantage on 83 minutes.

Gaping net

Everitt broke up an attack and his pass up the line was delightfully dummied by Rosegreen, completely deceiving Powell, and though the number ten's through ball intended for substitute Donovan, was cut out by Mark Harrop, he made his back pass to Turner, unfortunately for him his parry fell into the path of MERCHANT and he made no mistake on the shot.

Turner again show his agility in injury time when Merchant again broke into the box to drill an angled drive towards the far corner of the net only for the former Leyton Orient custodian to fist away in speculative fashion.

At the final whistle, Adders took full toll with Whitehurst releasing Russell, whose low cross was met first by Donovan, whose header cleared the crossbar and then ROSEGREEN neatly tapped in from close range into the path of MERCHANT.

Brookes added immediately after the final whistle: "It was for the final whistle. It was a little nerve-racking as we were only just in the lead. We had several good chances. I just wanted to see things up but in the end 3-0 wins is just the same as winning 10-0, so I can sleep easily tonight."

AUGUST

AUGUST PRE-SEASON knocks and strains

AUGUST

PRE-SEASON knocks and strains gave Nuneaton Borough a minor injury crisis before the start of the season which kicked off on August 22. Several players were carrying niggling injuries that were picked up in pre-season friendly games. Paul Culpin was struggling to shake off a groin strain and Tony Simpson was doubtful with an ankle injury along with Dave Whetton who was not 100 per cent fit. Fans were concerned at the time about the future of Paul Culpin at the Boro. The then manager George Rooney said: "Paul's future is virtually settled now and I can't see any problems in keeping him at the club."

'ROSIE' REVELS IN MUD

NUNEATON BOROUGH 2 LEICESTER UNITED 0 NUNEATON Borough battled through a strength-sapping quagmire at Manor Park on Saturday against luckless Leicester United to further reinforce their cherished promotion claims.

It was the third time this season that the two sides had met and despite the appalling conditions no one watching could say they did not get the full value of the entrance fee.

Striker Mark Rosegreen had an inspired match, revelling in the action and deservedly scoring both goals to take his season's tally to nine. And Ian Cottrill was a rock in defence, taking on an unaccustomed role to marshall the back line and playing a major part in containing Leicester.

Two goals for striker

AT MANOR PARK

Boro', who are rapidly becoming early goal specialists, struck in the third minute when John Symonds's pass put Kevan Kane clear on the left, his centre finding ROSEGREEN who squeezed the ball home past the diving Ian Marsden. Leicester were unlucky not to square the game two minutes later when Alan Liquorish fired a shot over the bar from the edge of the Boro' penalty area. As the odd spot of rain turned into a torrential downpour ball control became increasingly difficult and Bullock went close to adding a second when Marsden fumbled a free kick from Brian Mofgford, Kennedy clearing off the line. With 23 minutes gone Tony Simpson made a lone charge from deep in his own half to the edge of the Leicester area but with Symonds unmarked on the left he hung onto the ball too long and was overwhelmed by defenders. The visitors did not lack determination as they pressed forward but luck was not on their side as first Neil Dorsett, denied by 'keeper Peter Manuel and Anton Thomas, slipping at the last second as he looked

certain to score ensured that Boro' stayed ahead. With ten minutes to the half Boro' blitzed United's goal with attacks going in left right and centre, Simpson, Rosegreen and Paul Culpin all going close but the visitors clung on. With the second half three minutes old Rosegreen was unlucky not to make it two when he ran onto a perfect through ball from Darren Bullock only to shoot wide. Brian Mofgford's 51st minute corner was cleared to Bullock whose through ball set Culpin up only for his half struck shot to be turned away for a corner. Liquorish drew the save of the match from Manuel in the 63rd when he climbed to meet a centre from Cheadle only to see his point-blank range header tipped over the bar. It was Leicester's best chance to get on level terms and they were punished six minutes later when Boro' went 2-1 up. It was ROSEGREEN, sliding in to push the ball over the line, and finish off a Boro' attack that left a Culpin shot stuck in the mud with two defenders failing to clear. In spite of their uphill task, United continued the struggle, but the final quarter was marked by a whole series of Boro' corner kicks, substitute Peter Green going close with a shot and a close range header in a minute of frenzied action. At the final whistle the pitch resembled a first world war battlefield and if the weather does not improve over the next 24 hours tomorrow night's league fixture against Tamworth could be in doubt.

Borough: Manuel, Wade, Kane, Bullock, Ridding, Cottrill, Simpson, Culpin, Rosegreen, Mofgford, Symonds (P Green, 67). Sub: Martin.

LEICESTER UNITED 0 NUNEATON BOROUGH 3

LEICESTER UNITED 0 NUNEATON BOROUGH 3 LEICESTER UNITED 0 NUNEATON

LEICESTER UNITED 0 NUNEATON BOROUGH 3 DETERMINED Borough extended their unbeaten run to 21 matches last night when cruising to an impressive victory over Leicester United at Winchester Road in the Barclays Commercial Services Cup second round.

IAN Cottrill got George Rooney's men off to a flying start with a goal inside two minutes as Boro' continued where they left off at Kings Lynn last Saturday.

The stunning opener came from a Brian Mofgford corner which eluded top goal scorer Paul Culpin for COTTRILL to stab the ball home from 10 yards. It was the midfielder's second goal this season against United, his 90th minute effort in September setting Boro off on their current FA Cup run. Boro, without injured skipper Dave Whetton, looked to hold on to their unbeaten record this season and did not allow United to settle. The bitter cold had barely returned to numb the travelling band of Boro supporters when they were warmed by the Blues' second goal. A 13th minute cross from the left was headed on by Cottrill to ROSEGREEN who buried the ball in the net with a spectacular 'bicycle' kick from six yards. With the two-goal edge Boro's grip on the game increased and John Symonds in particular was in superb form, ripping through United on the left and linking well with Kevan Kane. Leicester had a chance to cut the deficit on the half hour from a header by midfielder David Tonge but Boro held firm and quickly broke back. With eight minutes to go to the half Cottrill had a chance to put Boro further ahead when a Symonds cross was knocked on by Culpin but the final touch wasn't strong enough to beat 'keeper Ian Marsden. Dangerman Mark Rosegreen needed treatment with seconds to go when he was chopped down by United's number five Chris Tonge who earned himself a booking for his troubles. Tony Simpson came on for Darren Bullock in the second half giving Boro extra width on the right. United started to put some nice moves together as the half wore on giving Boro some anxious moments at the back, Matt Tarry being involved in the thick of the action and getting in a telling through ball to Symonds on 67 minutes. Symonds's cross was picked up by Rosegreen whose shot from the edge of the box was scrambled away. A moment close a minute later as United pressed forward and it looked as though Boro would cave under the barrage, Alan Liquorish was unlucky with a close-range header that flew straight to 'keeper Peter Manuel. With two minutes to go Peter GREEN, replacing Rosegreen, put the seal on a fine night's work by the visitors, striking home the rebound after Culpin's acute-angled drive had struck the inside of the post.

BURTON ALBION 0 NUNEATON BOROUGH 3

BRILLIANT Borough bewildered Burton out of the FA Trophy in devastating style at Eton Park last night to book themselves a first round trip to County Durham to face the ambitious Gateshead — previously Morton.

Borough took total command from the outset and it was as though they always had it in their grasp to deny the Burton defenders in an excellent away performance.

Borough's pace was always evident throughout the game, their defence alert and Rosegreen was causing constant problems.

Borough matched them with the pace of the game — with pace and running that Burton simply could not live with.

Borough produced some fine running and Rosegreen proved himself after one corner — laying one on for the Borough score.

Tremendous

It was a post-goals threat when Jim Barron hit the crossbar and Andy Hollis the post during yet another hour's determined resistance from Burton — but that was their only danger during the whole 90 minutes.

But while Rosegreen rode the glory, it was Bradder who had to be thanked — laying on the first goal of the game from a corner and then whipping across one of the longest ever passes he'll ever make to set up Fitzpatrick and Rosegreen.

Littered

Chances were littered as both teams showed their quality throughout — the game and the occasion producing some fine football on both sides.

Clinical

Ian Bullions led the keeper through the Borough 90 minutes in place of a goal on the line — Clarke got it in the end.
