But he still finished smiling for Folly Lane squeezed through on penalties to reach the semi-finals for the first time.

COVENTRY Schools Under-12 side did a "Coventry City" today. In a Warwickshire Cup match against Birmingham Under-12s in Birmingham, they were 2-0 down at half-time before hitting back to win 3-2.

"It was just like the Sky Blues against West Ham," said a spokeman for the team. Fadi Hanna scored two goals, and Gary Baker the other.

Coventry Schools gained two cup wins over traditional rivals Leicester today.

The Under-14 squad, unbeaten so far, extended their record with a 3-2 Longford Fire Brigade Trophy success and the Under-15 team eased home 2-1 with two goals from Mark Rosegreen.

Pete Gandy, Gareth Evans and Daren Reilly shared the goals that won the Under-14 game and in the Bronson-Castele Trophy final, Rosegreen was Coventry's hero with the deciding goal coming in the final seconds.

MAC WIPES OUT RESERVES

IVAN GOLAC returned to the defence as unbeaten Saints Reserves took on West Ham Reserves in the Football Combination at The Dell this afternoon, anxious to avenge last Saturday's 3-2 defeat by the first team.

TEAMS Southampton: Kite, Golac, Rofe, Collins, P. Baker, Blankley, Brown, S. Baker, Baird, Juryeff, Rosegreen; sub Dixon.

West Ham: Vaughan, Spiers, Brush, Donald, McPherson, Orr, Parr, Matthews, Whitton, McMenemy, Parris; sub. Mays.

Referee: Mr B. M. Burns (Chandler's Ford).

Saints got off to a disastrous start, going 2-0 down within 11 minutes.

First team regular Steve Whitton, back after injury, punished two cardinal errors by the home side.

The first came after just three minutes. Barry Blankley was caught in possession by the burly West Ham forward near goal and Whitton went on to calmly slot the ball between Kite and his right-hand post.

Eight minutes later, A Steve Baker mistake in midfield was latched onto by Whitton, who curled the ball beautifully past the diving Kite and in off the right-hand post into the back of the net.

Saints began to step up the pressure and in the 25th minute, Juryeff headed over from eight yards. Baird felt he should have had a penalty after he went down on the edge of the area following a tackle in the 25th minute. A minute later his name went in to the referee's notebook for what appeared to be dissent.

The young Saints eventually clawed their way back into the match when the unmarked Mark Rosegreen gave Vaughan no chance with a header from eight yards, a splendid move by the home team down the right-wing.

Saints gained further confidence and in the 39th and 40th minutes, Juryeff twice went close.

But West Ham stretched their lead a minute before half-time when McMenemy cracked in a shot from the edge of the area to leave his uncle's club trailing 3-1 at the break. Half-time: Saints Res............................1 West Ham res......................3

Dear Mark,

I was hoping to pass on my personal congratulations last Saturday. Since you were unable to attend Club because of your selection for the County I decided to write instead.

Everyone at the Club was delighted to hear of your selection for England. There can surely be no greater honour for any lad of your age. You have achieved marvellous prestige for yourself and the clubs with which you are involved.

We will watch your continued progress with great interest.

All good wishes for the future

AP LEAMINGTON manager Graham Allner has been delighted with the progress of 17-year-old striker Mark Rosegreen this season.

Rosegreen, an A-level student at Coventry's Barr's Hill School came on as a substitute and scored AP's goal in the 1-1 draw with Welling United last weekend.

And Allner was considering giving him a full game today at Gravesend.

"He has got a lot of ability and he's coming on very well," said Allner.

"Sooner or later he was bound to get his chance — we gave him a run out in a friendly against a Birmingham City XI last season and only a brilliant save from Tony Coton stopped him scoring.

"He looked good in preseason friendlies, when once again I gave him part-games,

and then last Saturday he came on and scored our goal."

Rosegreen also scored the winner for AP in the FA Youth Cup against Corby on Sunday — and is sure to get a prolonged run at some stage this season.

AP will be boosted this week by the return of midfielder Alan Ollis, who has been touring Bangladesh with the Middlesex Wanderers.

And with Tim Garner recovered from a badly bruised ankle, veteran Gordon Livsey can go back to his job as Allner's assistant.

Livsey kept goal in AP's Southern League Cup second leg victory at Bedworth United and made a couple of important saves. And he then stayed between the sticks for

the visit of Welling last week.

Livsey was AP's first choice keeper until he broke his jaw midway through last season.

"Now he's dedicated himself to making Tim Garner into the best goalkeeper in the Southern League," said Allner.

COVENTRY — Sporting's senior side may be out of the FA Cup already — they lost 3-1 at Wigston Fields in a disappointing setback last week — but their youngsters are showing them the way.

Sporting's junior side won Wednesday's FA Youth Cup preliminary round replay with Paget Rangers at Ridy Corner.

The only goal of the game came from Dean Henry in the first half.

England call-up for Rosegreen

MARK ROSEGREEN, the talented Coventry striker, has been selected for the England Under-18s.

FOOTBALL

The Barrs Hill School student has been included in the 16-strong squad following the National Coaching Course at Lilleshall.

Rosegreen travelled down to Stafford for trials at the First Division club after shining in

an FA Youth Cup game at The Dell for his club side, AP Leamington.

The England programme has a home game at Swindon v Scotland, an away trip to Wales and a tour of Switzerland.

Squad preparations start next week at Lilleshall. The last Coventry schoolboy to represent his country was

John Lee from Ernesford Grange School two years ago. TWO early goals in an impressive start enabled Coventry Under-18s to reach the Warwickshire Cup final at the first National [unclear] round.

Woodall's Paul Shropstone netted with a spectacular volley taken by Safta Nelson. Tommy Gibbons (Finham Park), the latter scoring for the sixth time this season.

Greg Jarvis (Cardinal Newman) made crucial saves

to thwart Solihull's fightback and stubborn defence was a feature of this season's best all-round team performance.

Coventry's perseverance did not arrive until the last minute, too late to prevent the embarrassing officials for their final place at home to Albion and South Leicestershire next month.

The Under-13s squad travels to Oxford with the Under-14s and Under-15s on

Saturday to play friendly matches. The Under-12s team will be eager to reverse the score of an earlier encounter...

Oxford have progressed to the final of the English Schools Gillette Trophy.

For the Under-14 side it is a vital month given the end of season lay-off, and players will be keen to impress with the semi-finals of the Kings Trophy in the Warwickshire Cup taking place next Saturday.

Mark is a key member of AP Leamington's youth team and has caught the eye of Lawrie McMenemy.

COVENTRY Schools soccer sides served up goal-packed performances in a clean sweep against Lincoln at Bishop Ullathorne today.

The Under-13s set the trend with a thrilling 4-3 victory in their friendly, Sean Cassidy netting two goals, and Gary Cross and Derek Duggan completing their score.

The biggest win of the block fixture came from the Under-14s — maintaining their impressive unbeaten run — via a 7-1 scoreline. Two goals apiece for Darren Reilley and Peter Shearer were added to by Gareth Evans, Simon Wilkinson and Rohan Leith.

But the most remarkable scoring feat came from the Under-15's Mark Rosegreen. He crashed home four goals, and with a Lincoln defender adding an own goal, saw his side run out 5-2 winners.

Rosegreen on mark for Lion

Rosegreen on mark for Lion Rosegreen on mark for Lion

FESTIVAL LEAGUE: Lion Rangers earned a quarter final place in the FA Sunday Cup with a superb 4-1 away win over Walthamstow-based Leyton Argyle.

Rosegreen on mark for Lion

The home side put Lion under heavy pressure before Mark Rosegreen gave Rangers a 29th minute lead.

A tremendous double save by Paul Hayward shortly afterwards maintained the lead, before after 42 minutes, a fine four-man move down the left ended in Rosegreen's second.

Two fine solo goals from Kevin Francis put the game beyond the reach of the home side before Lion's rearguard was breached for the only time just before the end.

Sandwell have had a miserable 1987 in the premier Division, anchored at the foot of the table with only two draws to show for their efforts, but 1988 has started in great style with a 3-2 victory over league leaders Lodge Cottrell.

Slack defensive work twice let in Neil Adams to score for Sandwell, but Lodge equalised on both occasions, first through John Brooke and five minutes from time through Steve Rhodes.

A draw looked a certain until a last minute penalty gave Richie Southall the chance to get the winner.

The majority of games fell victim to the bad weather, but several of the sides who have been struggling turned in good performances.

Another of these was Abbey Mechanical who did themselves some good with a 1-0 win over Stanley Towers earned by a second half goal from Brown, after which they needed to put in some sterling defensive work to hang on to their advantage.

Junior Division 2 leaders HBA maintained their good form to pick up two more points with a 4-0 win over Keller, in which Richards scored twice, Mayers and Smith one each.

Red Admiral pulled themselves away from the danger area in Division 3 with a 2-1 win over bottom club Skylark. Keenan gave Skylark the lead but Admiral hit back to win with goals from Hazel and Foxall. A feature of the game were penalty saves by both 'keepers, Grimshaw and Shore.

In the same division, championship hopefuls Beacon went down 1-0 to Holly Park. Beacon had the chances to win but came up against 'keeper Rooke in sparkling form and his efforts ensured the goal from Allen was enough for victory.

A high-scoring game in Division 4 saw league leaders PSA go down 4-3 at home to Monica. PSA dominated the first half hour but failed to put away their chances. Two goals in three minutes put Monica into an unlikely lead before PSA pulled one back before the break. Monica increased their lead to 4-1 and although the deficit was reduced to 4-3 in a late rally, Monica held on to win.

Their scorers were Hawkes (2), Murphy and Stokes with Vannacore, Broadbent and Hepburn scoring for PSA.

Albion 2 Redditch 0

A Tony Morley goal early in the second half proved decisive for Albion in this Birmingham Senior Cup semi-final.

Morley curled a delightful 15yd shot just inside the post in the 52nd minute, after which the Redditch challenge faded until a late surge almost brought a consolation goal for the impressive Mark Rosegreen.

The Redditch striker was a constant source of danger to Albion's defence, although the home side were always capable of stepping up a gear when necessary.

Albion, fielding a reserve team who included five players with first-team experience, started in storming fashion and took the lead with a Paul Dyson header in the first minute.

Naylor had to make another smart save when Randolf Richards sent in a good header six minutes before the interval, but Redditch were caught cold at the start of the second half just as they had been in the first period.

Albion mounted a series of attacks which eventually led to their second goal, curled in by Morley from a Graham Easter pass seven minutes after the break.

For the rest of the second half Redditch battled gamely to get back into the game, but it was only in the last few minutes they went close to scoring.

Church snatch late victory

Alvechurch 2, Redditch United 1

SUNDAY MERCURY, DECEMBER 20, 1987 — BEAZER PREMIER

AN INSPIRED second half performance by Alvechurch saw them snatch victory after Redditch had dominated all the opening exchanges. Church keeper Dennis Burke was kept constantly busy as the Reds sought revenge on their North Worcestershire neighbours for a September FA Cup defeat.

He was left flapping at a Rosegreen chip in the fifth minute and was then left standing as the former Kidderminster Harriers striker headed just past the angle from a pinpoint Morgan cross.

Burke then made a spectacular diving catch to hold a Rosegreen shot after an inch perfect Caddick pass had set him up.

Early in the second half, Alvechurch had their first real chance of the game when Satchwell lobbed over after good work by East.

However, the recent signing made amends on 66 minutes when he bundled in a Pinnock centre after the midfielder raced clear of his marker.

Eight minutes from time, Morgan had an equalising chance blocked on the line before Clive East was bundled over in the Redditch penalty area by Caddick.

Alvin Pinnock gratefully smashed in the 87th minute kick on his return to Lye Meadow only to see Redditch push forward from the restart and net from a rasping Rosegreen shot.

Burke had to make two crucial blocks in injury time to clinch the points.
